Fishing gear is just as expensive as hunting

I thought fishing would be a cheaper hobby but clearly I was wrong! Why are outdoor hobbies so expensive?

Fishing and hunting are proof that enjoying nature comes with a side of financial pain.

I told myself fishing would be cheap too. Then came rods, reels, tackle boxes and before I knew it, I was talking about buying a boat. Outdoor hobbies just seem to breed gear before you know it.

Wait until you get into fly fishing, just one rod and reel can end up costing more than a decent hunting rifle. Somehow, every outdoor hobby finds a way to make your gear multiply faster than you expect.

I clobberred several fingers on both hands with assorted chainsaws and tractor components over the years and used to tie flies as a way to regain/keep dexterity. Seldom fished them, but tied a bunch. Material costs are ridiculous. So I switched to making my own spinning lures. A bit cheaper than fly tying, but not much cheaper than buying manufactured spinning lures. It is relaxing, though. And, for me, more productve when fishing.

That’s pretty resourceful, turning rehab time into gear you actually trust on the water.

And productive as well. Yum! Five rainbow taken with a clone of a #3 CP Swing spinner. Three today and two (plus one The Admiral took on a powerbait egg) in the freezer for later. Before baking/broiling and after.
