Been kicking around the idea of building my first AR-15 for a bit now. Finally started to look at parts and, wow, there's a lot out there. Some deals seem pretty good, but honestly, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about what's actually worth it and what's not.

I want to keep it simple for my first build — thinking I'll stick with a 5.56 caliber for now. But if anyone has suggestions for a better route for a newbie, I'm all ears.

Are there any specific brands you guys would say to steer clear of? I've seen tons of options but I have no idea which ones are decent and which ones are just hype. Also, what about those hidden costs I should worry about? I've heard some folks drop way more than they planned because of small stuff.

And then there's the question of whether I should just buy a factory-built gun instead. Is it worth the extra hassle of building one? I know there's a learning curve, but I also don't want to end up with a pile of parts and nothing functional.

If you've gone through the process, I'd love to hear any tips or stories about mistakes you made. Really appreciate any advice you can throw my way.

Aero precision receiver, nickel-boron bolt, chrome lined barrel. 5.56 is a good choice. Make life easy, buy a pre-built upper. The barrel and bolt are worth splurging on. Go basic with the rest; you can swap out or upgrade the other parts: stock, grip, trigger, after you have some experience with the basic setup. Good to learn how to use iron sights, a good scope is nice but expensive, a $99.- SIG Romeo red dot works fine.
Good luck.
