I know at least one other person here has mentioned hunting with a bow. A recurve I believe , to be exact. I hunt with a recurve and long bows as well as with a compound bow. Anyone else here hunt with a bow ?

My camp name is "Stumpkiller" because I prefer roving and stump shooting to hunting. But I do a bunch of bowhunting as well. Tried compounds for 2 years and gave up and went back to recurves (I shot archery in college and did pretty well with recurves). Most of the recurves I hunt with were made in the 60's and 70's and I picked them up at garage sales or flea markets. I make my own arrows out of Douglas fir and fletch them up with turkey feathers and tip them with glue-on broadheads. I like the nostalgia.

I put the compound away 3 years ago, and started hunting with a recurve. Unsuccessful so far, but the archery season is just around the corner.

I made so many mistakes with a compound that I just gave up. Wrong pin, too much movement at draw, aluminum arrows sounding like a violin when drawing, having to hold to aim at a vertical bow position, etc.. Now I just draw to anchor on a quiet sealskin pad and release when at full draw.

Agreed with you on the violin sound. I am deafer than a stone and can still hear it. I actually began drawing back on deer just to see their reaction. Lately it is my bones and joints making all the noise.

I kind of suspected from your Handle that you were a Trad. Archer. There's nothing like a little stump shooting to keep your archery skills honed. I mostly do 3D shoots with a few buddies these days .
