I've been thinking about getting a shotgun for home defense and could use some insights from anyone who's used one. I'm stuck between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. I know the 12ga packs a punch, but I've heard the 20ga is easier to manage in tight spaces. What should I really consider? Barrel length seems crucial — I'm leaning toward something shorter for maneuverability. What stock setups work best? Also, any specific models you've had luck with? I'm aiming for something reliable and straightforward. And on the training side, how much practice should I be doing? I shot a few times before, but nothing serious. What's a good routine to get ready for home defense?

The one you can get to quickest with shells readily available. #4 shot should suffice across most indoor rooms without endangering the neighbors.

The first part of your statement is true but I personally wouldn't stake my life on #4 bird shot in Any self defense situation.

Ever seen what a shotgun does to a body from 10 or 20 feet away? I killed a 180 lb buck fallow deer with a 20 gauge and high brass #6. I could place both on my hands in the hole where the heart had been.
