looking for a simple fishing setup for my kid

I've been thinking about taking my 5-year-old fishing for the first time, but I really don't know much about it. I saw a few kid-friendly rods at the store, and they look pretty easy to handle. Is that a good way to go? I'm just hoping to have a fun day by the water without a lot of fuss. Any tips on what to bring or how to keep it simple would be really helpful!
