Yes hunting, yes protection, and yes FUN. Also pest control (we raised sheep and currently have 20 chickens). I have a .30 cal PCP with range-finding night optics and there is no sport involved in dispatching vermin. A couple flintlocks I own are just because I wanted to see if I could have met that challenge (they work for hunting just fine). And some surplus centerfires for heavy-duty plinking and one of those, a Finnish M39, I harvested two whitetail deer with. Something about plinking with full battle rounds is very satisfying.
And should SHTF a 10 round .303 Brit No4 Mk2 with two bandoleers of ammo might not be unwelcome.
