I started the process of buying my first handgun in New York and wow, the SAFE Act restrictions narrow down options significantly. I visited three different shops and got different answers about what's actually compliant. I am getting pretty confused about magazine capacity limits and feature restrictions. What handguns do experienced NY gun owners recommend that are clearly compliant and readily available here?

Just buy a Glock 19 or a Sig P320, factory-neutered with the 10-round mags. It's the boring, expensive, but guaranteed way. Don't listen to the guys pushing anything with a threaded barrel, they just want your money and a headache...keep it simple and wait for the stamp of approval.

My EDC is a S&W Shield 9 w/o thumb safety (v1.0). I added MagGuts springs and followers to my magazines so the compact one is now 9+1 and the full-size is 10 rounds. Lately I have just been buying Taran 10 round magazines. The Tarans are about 3/8” longer than the OEM magazine but I feel the added two rounds justifies it.

Killer story: I won a pistol in a drawing but could not accept it because it held 13 rounds. Happily it wasn’t much of a pistol (Bersa), but it still sucks.

Glock 19 or factory-neutered P320 sounds like the safe route, any tips on reliable NY dealers or sources that actually stock compliant models?

Nice setup, MagGuts plus Taran 10s is a smart, practical solution. That pistol win stinks though and losing a prize over a 13-round mag would've pissed me off too

Not sure why there’s any confusion. Mag capacity is 10 PERIOD. As mentioned above keep it simple. I’d recommend P365.
